A dedicated developer in Sri Lanka works only on your product, takes your daily direction, and is billed monthly. Directory rates for Sri Lankan software firms start around $25 an hour, with senior and specialist roles higher. It suits ongoing products and agencies needing extra capacity, not one-off projects under a month.
This guide explains how the model works, what it costs according to public directories, how to manage a remote developer across time zones, and what to agree before day one. We are a Sri Lankan agency and we say where we would quote per project rather than publish a price. For the bigger picture of working with a Sri Lankan team, see our guide to outsourcing software development to Sri Lanka.
What is a dedicated developer, and how is it different from a project contract?
In a project contract, an agency agrees to deliver a defined result for an agreed price or budget. You manage the outcome, and the agency manages the people. In a dedicated model, you get one or more developers who work only on your product. You set priorities, they work in your tools and meetings, and you pay a monthly fee instead of a fee per deliverable.
| Model | You manage | Billing | Best for | |---|---|---|---| | Fixed-price project | The outcome | Per project or milestone | Clear, small scope | | Dedicated developer | Daily priorities | Monthly | Ongoing product work | | Team pod (developer, designer, QA) | Product direction | Monthly | A growing product with several needs | | Retainer | Requests as they come | Monthly block of hours | Maintenance and small changes |
The trade-off is control against responsibility. You get flexibility and direct access, but you carry more of the product management. If you want someone else to own delivery, a project contract is safer. Our guide to fixed price vs time and materials helps you choose.
When does a dedicated team make sense, and when not?
It fits when:
- You have a product that will need months or years of work.
- You are an agency or studio that needs extra capacity without hiring locally.
- You already have a product owner who can write tasks and review work daily.
- Your needs change week to week and you want to steer them.
It does not fit when:
- Your project is a one-off build under a month. A project quote or a freelancer is usually cheaper.
- You cannot spare time to give direction. An unmanaged developer drifts.
- You have not defined what you want yet. Start with scoping first. See our guide on how to scope a software project.
If you are weighing options, our comparison of freelancer vs software agency covers the middle ground.
How much does a dedicated developer cost in Sri Lanka?
We do not publish a rate card here, because we quote per project and per profile, based on seniority, stack and how long you need the person. What we can give you is attributed public data, which shows the range you will see across the market.
- GoodFirms reports a median hourly rate of $25 across verified Sri Lankan software firms, and a median of $37 in the app development category.
- Clutch lists Sri Lankan developer profiles in the "under $25" and "$25 to $49" hourly bands.
- DesignRush lists at least one Colombo firm at $100 an hour, which shows how wide the range can be.
Salary is not price. WageIndicator reports software and application developer pay of LKR 38,501 to 181,817 per month for 2026. That is what an employee may earn, and it is a floor, not a vendor price. An agency rate also covers employer costs, equipment, management, QA oversight, replacement cover and profit. Quotes from a vendor will therefore be well above a salary figure, and a quote that sits at salary level deserves questions.
What drives the monthly price:
- Seniority and years in your stack
- Specialist skills (mobile, DevOps, AI)
- Number of developers and length of commitment
- Whether design, QA or project management is included
- Overlap hours you need with your team
Which skills can you hire?
Common requests include Laravel and PHP, React and Next.js, Node.js, mobile (Flutter or React Native), UI/UX design, QA testing and AI or automation work. Availability depends on the vendor and on the month, so ask for profiles that match your stack and check them against real work. Our web design and development and UI/UX design teams cover the web and design side. If you plan a mobile product, see our post on mobile app development in Sri Lanka.
For context on the talent base, SLASSCOM reported in July 2026 about 175,000 IT-BPM professionals and roughly 17,000 graduates joining each year. That tells you the pool exists. It does not tell you who is available, good and right for your product.
How do you manage a team across time zones?
Sri Lanka runs on UTC+5:30 all year with no daylight saving. Upwork notes that this gives favourable overlap with Asia-Pacific, the Middle East and parts of Europe, and limited overlap with North America. So Europe and the Gulf are easy, and the US needs a plan.
Habits that work for most distributed teams:
- Agree a fixed overlap window of one to three hours for live discussion.
- Write tasks as short tickets with a clear "done" definition.
- Hold a brief daily written check-in, and a weekly live demo of working software.
- Use one tracker, one repository and one chat channel.
- Record decisions in writing so nothing lives only in a call.
How does onboarding work in the first 30 days?
A structured start prevents most early disappointment. Use this checklist.
Week 1
- [ ] Sign the contract and NDA. See our guide to NDA, IP ownership and data protection.
- [ ] Create accounts under your name: repository, cloud, tracker.
- [ ] Share the product vision, user stories and a short code tour.
Week 2
- [ ] The developer sets up a local environment and completes one small, real task.
- [ ] Agree the coding standards, branching and review process.
Weeks 3 and 4
- [ ] Assign a medium task with a clear outcome.
- [ ] Review the code, communication and speed together.
- [ ] Decide whether to continue, adjust or add capacity.
Treat the first month as a paid trial for both sides. That is a fair way to confirm the fit.
Who owns the code, and what happens if a developer leaves?
You should own the code, and your contract should say so. Keep the repository in your account, so the work stays with you if the relationship ends. Ask the vendor how they handle replacement: how quickly, whether you interview the new person, and whether a handover period is included. A vendor with more than one developer can usually offer cover. A single freelancer cannot. Agree these terms in writing before you start.
Can IT Starter white-label for agencies?
Agencies sometimes need a quiet back-end partner. We are open to discussing white-label arrangements, with the right NDA and clear client boundaries. We have delivered 70+ projects for 60+ clients, and we handle capacity case by case, so ask us what is realistic for your timeline and stack. Our software development service page describes the work we do.

FAQ
How much does it cost to hire a developer in Sri Lanka?
Public directories show a wide range. GoodFirms reports a $25 hourly median for Sri Lankan software firms, Clutch lists "under $25" and "$25 to $49" tiers, and one DesignRush listing shows $100. Seniority and stack drive the price. We quote per profile and per project.
Can I hire one developer for one month?
Often yes, but it is rarely the best value. Onboarding takes time, and a one-month engagement leaves little to show for it. For short, well-defined work, a fixed-price project or a freelancer may be cheaper. A dedicated developer pays off over several months.
How fast can a developer start?
It depends on current availability, which changes month to month. We would rather give you an honest date after a short call than promise a number here. Whatever vendor you choose, ask for a named start date and a profile before you sign.
Do you provide a replacement if someone leaves?
Replacement terms should be in your contract: how quickly cover is arranged, who pays for the handover period and whether you can approve the new person. Ask every vendor for these terms in writing. We discuss them as part of the agreement, not as a blanket promise.
Can I interview the developer first?
You should. A 30-minute call, plus a short paid task, tells you more than a CV. Check communication, English, and how they ask questions. A vendor who refuses an interview is a red flag.
